As an artist I love showing off my work, and what better way than putting it out on the web! I have been doing scrimshaw and pen and ink work as a hobby for many years. My second hobby is muzzle loading and attending rendezvous, where many people with the love of bygone times get together, dressing in period clothes. There are always traders and suttlers with authentic items for sale or trade. There isn't anything better than sitting around a campfire at night after the tourists leave and listening to music played on a bagpipe or whatever instruments people have with them. Oh the stories that are told! Everyone always has such a good time. Making new friends and seeing old ones -- it just doesn't get much better! The 1700's was such an adventurous time in which to live!
Much of my work has been done for my muzzle loading friends, creating their own ideas and individual personalities on powder horns. Those are made from cattle horns on which a good friend of mine, John Adams, does his own special work before I even get started.
I do smaller pieces using ivory macarta for jewelry and just about anything someone asks for. There are so many possibilities, as I never limit my art or my abilities. I am always looking for new ideas and projects. I will be adding more pictures in the future, so please come back often.
I am honored that editor Eric Bye at Muzzle Blasts magazine
decided my talent as an engraver was good enough to be included
in his article "Tops of Their Trade" in the December 2002 issue.
Thank you to all those that put their faith in me to create that
special vision.
If you have any questions about the lost art of scrimshaw or would be interested in having a custom piece done please e-mail me. I would love to hear from you, and I hope you enjoy the pictures!
If you would like to place an order, please contact me by FAX: 1-618-284-7772 or by E-MAIL: Gary@scrimshawartist.com. More than likely there will be a waiting list, so please be patient. This type
of artwork is very time-consuming, and I can only do a limited number of pieces/horns a year.
